UNETBOOTIN: Boot your Linux painlessly with USB Stick

Some (or maybe many) of you must have come across forums and blogs having posts about making the USB drive bootable, some kind of commands type... But its difficult to remember those commands just by looking at them. I'm sharing here what I used (recently) for booting up my PC from my USB drive.

Unetbootin is Universal Netboot Installer that provides you a nice graphical interface and lets you boot your Linux distro from your USB drive. All you need to do is:

  1. Plug in your USB Drive.
  2. Run Unetbootin.
  3. Select the distribution and its version from the drop down menu at the top. A lot of distributions are provided for the user.

  4. Select the 'Diskimage' radio button and browse the image file of the Linux flavour.

  5. Press OK and Boom!!!
    That's it...:-)

Your USB Stick must be ready within a few seconds.
Reboot your machine. Change your Boot sequence accordingly (make sure that USB is above the hard drive) and boot in significantly lesser time than normal CD booting.

Download Unetbootin from here.
You can also boot some UNIX flavours, or other rescue CD's like system rescue CD, GRUB Disk, Dr. Web Antivirus, Kaspersky Rescue Disk and even FREEDOS with Unetbootin. These options are given under 'Distribution' drop down menu.
All you need is an image file, and a USB drive...:-)
